Hurricane Tips from Mahoney's Garden Center
- Secure Outdoor Furniture & Umbrellas
Bring in or securely cover any furniture that might go flying. Take down umbrellas and bring indoors – they're known to take joy rides in high winds. - Bring Hanging Baskets Inside
Don't let your gorgeous hanging baskets fall to their demise! - Stake New Trees
Use at least three (3) stakes and ties to secure newly planted trees – young roots aren't established enough to protect trees from high winds. - Take Down Bird Feeders & Wind Chimes
But remember to fill it and put it out so your feathered friends can eat soon after the storm. - Secure Trellises & Arbors
Add a few more nails or tie them to something secure. - Bring Pottery or Container Gardens Inside
Hurricanes are bound to knock over your container gardens & pottery – bring them into a sheltered area. - Harvest Vegetables or Bring Plants Inside
Harvest as much as possible – tomatoes are particularly vulnerable to high winds. Not ripe yet? Try Fried Green tomato recipes! If in containers, follow tip number 6.
